General: Belize (formerly British Honduras until the name of the country was changed in 1973) borders the Caribbean Sea along the eastern shore of Central America, Mexico in the North and West, and Guatemala on the South and West. The country is a parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy which recognizes Queen Elizabeth II as Sovereign. The name is shared by the Belize River (the country's longest river), and Belize City (the former capital and largest city). Britain granted British Honduras self-government in 1964. British Honduras was officially renamed Belize in 1973 and attained full independence on 21 September 1981. Belize is the only country in Central America where English is the official language. It is the only nation in Central America with a British colonial heritage, and is the only constituent nation of the Commonwealth of Nations in its region. Visitors should exercise caution and good judgment when visiting Belize. Crime can be a serious problem, particularly in Belize City and remote areas. Telephone country code: 501, Internet country code: .bz
Provinces/districts: Belize is divided into 6 districts:
Belize District
Cayo District
Corozal District
Orange Walk District
Stann Creek District
Toledo District
Major cities: Belmopan (new capital city established in 1970), Belize City (the commercial capital and largest city and the main sea port, almost 30% of the population of Belize live here), Orange Walk Town, Dangriga (the second largest port, Commerce Bight is just south of Dangriga), Corozal Town, San Ignacio and Santa Elena, Benque Viejo del Carmen, Punta Gorda, San Pedro
Major international airports: Phillip S. W. Goldson International Airport - BZE (situated 10 miles from Belize City). Almost all Belize's international flights go through Philip Goldson International Airport. There are many airports in Belize but not all have regularly scheduled flights. Some regional airports are only served by small local airlines.
Sea ports: Belize City, Big Creek
Public transportation: Most Belizeans travel the country using public buses as their primary form of transportation. In the larger towns and cities, such as Belize City or Belmopan, there are bus terminals. In smaller places, there are bus stops. However, the most common way of catching a bus is by flagging it down on the road.
Taxis: Taxis are one of the simplest ways to get around in Belize. They are widely available and inexpensive. Official taxis are identifiable by green plates. It is advisable to always negotiate the fare before you get into the taxi as taxis in Belize don't use meters. Belize City is the least expensive place to take a taxi with rates of US$2.50 between any two places for one person, and US$0.50 for each additional person. Cinderella Taxi and Caribbean Taxi are the dominant services in Belize City.
