Useful Information. Useful Information on Senegal Map of Senegal.
General: The Republic of Senegal is a country south of the Senegal River in western Africa. Senegal is externally bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Mauritania to the north, Mali to the east, and Guinea and Guinea-Bissau to the south; internally it almost completely surrounds The Gambia. Senegal has an estimated population of about 14 million. The town of St Louis became the capital of French Western Africa (Afrique-Occidentale Francaise, or AOF) before it was moved to Dakar in 1902. Dakar later became its capital in 1960 at the time of independence from France. Senegal has a wide variety of ethnic groups and several languages are widely spoken. The Wolof are the largest single ethnic group in Senegal at 43% and the Peul and Toucouleur are the second largest group at 24%. International telephone country code: +221, Internet country code: .sn, Electricity voltage: 230V frequency 50 Hz, Electrical outlet: European 2-pin type C, French 2-pin type E and Old British 3-pin type D, Time zone: GMT
Climate: The climate is tropical with two seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season is from November to May and is dominated by hot, dry wind. Dry season temperatures average between 22°C and 30°C (72°F and 86°F). Inland temperatures are higher than along the coast. Rainfall occurs between June and October although showers don't last very long. Humidity is highest during the rainy season and sea temperatures are warmer during this period.
Languages: The official language is French. There are many local languages, mainly Wolof. Other languages include Pulaar, Mandinka and Diola. French is used regularly by a minority of Senegalese.
Major cities: Dakar (capital city), Touba, Thies, Kaolack, M'Bour, Saint-Louis, Rufisque, Ziguinchor.
The capital Dakar is by far the largest city with over two million residents. The second most populous city is Touba with half a million.
Regions/Districts: Senegal is subdivided into 14 regions, each administered by a Regional Council and the regional capitals have the same name as their respective regions: Dakar, Diourbel, Fatick, Kaffrine, Kaolack, Kedougou, Kolda, Louga, Matam, Saint-Louis, Sedhiou, Tambacounda, Thies, Ziguincho
Major airports:
- Dakar, DKR Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport
- Cap Skirring, CSK Cap Skirring Airport
- Matam, MAX Ouro Sogui Airport
Ports and harbours: Dakar, Kaolack, Lyndiane, Ziguinchor
Dakar has one of the largest deep-water seaports along the West African coast.
Taxis: Taxis (black-yellow or blue-yellow in colour) are cheap, numerous and available everywhere in Dakar. It is customary to negotiate the fare since most meters installed in the taxis are broken or missing. If you are a tourist, you will probably have a very high price proposed, so ask locals beforehand to give you an indication of the cost. Senegal became the first country in Africa to sponsor an all-female taxi program. The new group, called 'Taxi Sisters' operate in Dakar and are taking on the men - and their notoriously old and dangerous vehicles. For travel outside Dakar, public transportation is available but often unreliable and uncomfortable.
Currency: The official currency of Senegal is the West African CFA Franc. Each franc is divided into 100 centimes. This currency is used in a total of 14 West African and Central African states, which are part of the CFA. CFA is short for Communaute Financiere Africaine. However, Only CFA francs issued by the Bank of West Africa will be accepted in Senegal. Notes from the Bank of Central Africa will not be accepted. The currency code for the CFA Franc is XOF. The XOF is pegged to the Euro. 1 Euro is equal to 656 XOF. Notes are in denominations of XOF 10,000, 5,000, 2,000 and 1,000. Coins are in denominations of XOF 500, 200, 100, 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1. Senegal is part of the French Monetary Area. The approximate exchange rate on 11 November 2010 was: 1 Euro = 656 XOF, 1 US$ = 475 XOF, 1 GB£ = 765 XOF.
Money: The local currency is the West African CFA Franc (XOF) although Euros are also accepted in the hotels at the fixed rate of 1 Euro = 656 XOF. You can get cash from ATMs or change money at a bank, hotel, or official money exchange outlet in Senegal. Major Credit cards are generally accepted in hotels and restaurants. Traveller's cheques are generally accepted in Dakar but limited or no acceptance outside Dakar. There are ATMs in Dakar but only a few outside the city and may not accept foreign cards.
- Foreign currency import allowance: Unlimited provided it is declared on arrival.
- Foreign currency export allowance: Up to the equivalent of XOF 50,000. For any amount in excess, the declaration issued on arrival must be presented, with the annotation of all exchanges and re-exchange into foreign currencies.
- Local currency export allowance: Up to XOF 20,000.
- Local currency import allowance: Local currency and currencies of the French monetary area within Europe or Africa, unlimited.
Casinos: Gambling is legal in Senegal for casino and lottery. Senegal casinos are mostly in the capital Dakar and one casino in the port town of Saint-Louis, 200 miles to the north. Senegal casinos tend to be located in resort complexes. The largest casino in Dakar is in the Terrou-bi resort located on the Route Corniche Ouese. This resort also features a hotel, gastronomic restaurant, swimming pool, and a night club.
